The Houston Astrodome has been in limbo, waiting for its chance at a second life since being shuttered more than 15 years ago. It was a technological marvel when it opened in 1965. But its heyday has long passed and it hasn’t been home to a sports team since the Astros left in 1999 and it was closed to all events a decade later.

On Wednesday, the Astrodome Conservancy unveiled its ambitious $1 billion plan, Vision: Astrodome, with a mission to answer the decades-long question of what to do with the landmark. Gensler Houston design firm created the redevelopment concept.

The Astrodome Conservancy is hoping a new $1 billion vision to redevelop the retired ballpark will spark interest in preserving the Houston landmark.State of play: The Astrodome has been largely vacant since 2002 and was deemed noncompliant with the Houston fire code in 2008.

According to CNN, the $1 billion plan for the structure includes four state-of-the-art buildings under its roof and a retail village. Renderings show a boulevard that would cut through the dome and connect other buildings to NRG Park.
