Yet that’s exactly what the Sixers are looking at this year. Back-to-backs demand minutes, energy and risk flare-ups—the stuff Embiid can’t afford right now.
Maxey has already proven that he can be one of the best guards in the league. He earned his first All-Star appearance in 2024 and won the Most Improved Player of the Year award. McCain, meanwhile, surprised everyone with how he played. He even finished with one third-place vote in the Rookie of the Year ballot.
Given Embiid's extensive history of lower-body injuries, sitting out on one half of back-to-backs is reasonable. Even if it means he'll likely never be eligible for regular-season awards, if there's any chance of preserving his health, this is likely the best route. At 31 years old, it's even more essential to preserve Embiid's health.
