BOULDER CREEK — The quake that shook residents awake early Thursday from Fairfield to Soledad and east to Lodi proved to be a “great test” of the state’s earthquake-warning alert system, even though those living closest to the epicenter tallied its effects more in rattled nerves than messy floors.

The quake had a magnitude of 4.9, the Geological Survey reported on its website. The quake was located just east of Boulder Creek in Santa Cruz County.
