Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson predicted Monday the federal government shutdown may become the longest in history, saying he “won't negotiate” with Democrats until they hit pause on their health care demands and reopen.

Former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan, once known as the most powerful man in the state, will head to prison on Monday to begin his 7 ½-year sentence. Madigan, 83, held the position of House speaker for 36 years. In June, he was convicted on bribery, conspiracy, and fraud charges. He also faces a $2.5 million fine.
