In the last decade, many automakers have promised lower-cost EVs but failed to deliver. Tesla, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia and Fiat are the closest to that proposition. The cheapest EV that can be purchased outright today in the U.S. is the Fiat 500e with a manufacturer's suggested retail price starting at $30,500.

The new 2026 Nissan LEAF will arrive at US dealerships any day now. And it’s even cheaper than the OG model launched in 2011. With prices starting under $30,000, Nissan says the new LEAF will be the most affordable EV in the US. And it’s bringing more range, faster charging, and plenty of other upgrades.
