Hurricane Erin was taking aim at the U.S. East Coast on Wednesday morning, according to forecasters who are warning Americans of life-threatening rip currents along beaches that could persist for days.

The National Hurricane Center is also watching two tropical disturbances to the east of Erin that could develop into named cyclones. With thousands of miles of warm ocean water, hurricanes known as Cape Verde storms are some of the most dangerous that threaten North America.

Hurricane Erin may not make landfall, but it still could have a devastating consequences for East Coast residents. The first hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic season is forecast to cause rough surf, large waves and life-threatening rip currents for much of the East Coast despite churning northward several hundred miles offshore.
