Episode 29 of the ongoing Kilauea eruption came to an abrupt end Sunday evening after more than 13 hours of continuous lava fountaining, according to the U.S. Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. The north vent ceased activity around 6:35 p.m., several hours after the south vent had already gone quiet.

Kilauea's 30th eruption episode is now underway, with lava fountains soaring up to 70 feet high from both the north and south vents in Halemaʻumaʻu crater.
The activity started around 1:20 a.m. with broad fountains 150 to 300 feet high from the crater’s north vent, covering about 20% of the crater floor. A new line of smaller fountains also emerged south of the old south vent area, coinciding with a cluster of small earthquakes.
