This House Finch was successfully rehabilitated after her foot got stuck in a metal clip attached to a bird feeder, injuring one of her feet. Despite these injuries, this finch made a great recovery and was successfully released back home! While many people enjoy feeding birds, they are not without risk, unintentional entrapments being one of them. More commonly we receive finches from areas where feeders aren't being cleaned appropriately, which causes spread of various diseases like mycoplasmo

Watching our young patients grow up and learn natural behaviors is one of the most rewarding parts of rehabilitation. These finches are getting close to moving to their outdoor enclosures soon but in the meantime they’re enjoying their indoor pool! | Blue Ridge Wildlife Center

Our raptor room is filling up fast! Check out the video for an inside look at our raptor room, some timelapses of treatments and how much cleaning and effort goes into these patients, and witness one of our Barred Owls being moved into a larger flight enclosure for the first time! Winter can be a hard time for raptors. Many of them resort to roadways for easy roadkill meals and to hunt the rodents that take advantage of any roadside trash, but often get struck by cars while hunting. Many more ra

Help us with one of the most crucial parts of our patients’ rehabilitation journey - the release! We recently had to purchase a new soft-release enclosure for the upcoming releases of our four young red foxes. What’s a soft release? A soft release means that these animals will be assisted for a period of time after their release. In this case, assistance is provided through temporary shelter and food while our foxes adjust to their new surroundings and get to practice their hunting skills. In th

Check out this nestling we received earlier this week - can you #TakeAWildGuess at the species? Rehabilitators across the country have to identify young birds coming into care every day by small details such as size, sound, feather pattern and color, mouth color, bill shape, and in this case as well, specialized patterns inside the mouth! Check in later this afternoon for a species reveal! | Blue Ridge Wildlife Center

We see it every year - people find a baby or injured animal and believe they have the resources, knowledge, and experience to care for them. Unfortunately, despite these good intentions, we see countless animals brought to us suffering from aspiration pneumonia, metabolic bone disease, emaciation, skin infections, and untreated injuries after people have “done their best.” These animals deserve more than your best - they deserve legal and professional care. If you find a wild animal in need, the

Our raccoons loved the enrichment our rehab fellow, Sydnie, put together for them by making an entire ball pit made out of our leftover cardboard paper towel rolls! Raccoons are incredibly smart, so enrichment items keeping them busy and keeping their minds engaged is especially important during a time where they're learning and growing! #Raccoons #WildlifeRehab #BabySeason #Enrichment | Blue Ridge Wildlife Center

Our youngest Eastern Gray Squirrel patients are almost ready to move outside! They're currently acclimating to the colder temperatures in larger enclosures on our screened-in porch. These individuals, and the 8 others we have still in care, will be with us until spring, which means they need our help keeping busy! We employ a variety of enrichment items, from natural items like leaves, logs, and dirt, to items they really have to work at, like this cardboard box filled with tasty treats! Enrichm

This adult Eastern Cottontail made a successful recovery from severe head trauma and an eye injury. After just over a week in care, this patient was eating on her own, fully coordinated, & ready to go! We don’t often get the opportunity to rehabilitate & release adult cottontails, & our staff is honored to give this adult a second chance at a wild life! #wildliferehab #wildliferescue #easterncottontail #release | Blue Ridge Wildlife Center

This Mourning Dove made a recovery after suffering from some sort of unknown trauma that left them with an injury to the left eye and neurologic issues that caused leg weakness. After being in care for nearly 3 weeks, receiving anti-inflammatories, pain medications, medicated eye drops, and supplemental tube feedings, this dove was cleared for release! #SecondChance #WildlifeRehab #MourningDove #Release | Blue Ridge Wildlife Center

This juvenile Northern Short-tailed shrew was found and subsequently rescued from a homeowner's pool. They acted swiftly and got this little fellow into care. Once warmed and hydrated, this patient was offered mealworms and began eating voraciously! Shrews have an extremely high metabolism, and eat three times their body weight in food each day. As the only venomous mammal in North America, they subdue their prey with a neurotoxic bite (though fatal to the insects and worms they eat, it is not d

My name is Anna and welcome to a day in the life of a wildlife rehabilitation summer intern! From bats to bunnies to birds and more, our day is jam-packed with caring for the thousands of patients we received this summer. While every day is different, some of my duties include preparing animal diets, cleaning out enclosures, administering medications, and getting daily weights and body conditions on our animals. In between these duties I am also doing janitorial work such as doing dishes, laundr

Thank you to all of our amazing transporters who get wildlife to our facility for care and back home when they're ready for release! This Eastern Screech Owl was recently released after it recovered from a vehicle collision. Thankfully, this bird didn't have any broken bones, but was suffering from head trauma and soft tissue damage. With treatment, this owl was able to make a full recovery. With limited staff, volunteers are essential to the rescue, transport, and day-to-day care of our patient

Patient update! This Canada Goose was extremely excited to return home after a month in care! We posted about this individual on February 4th shortly after they came to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the left leg. The pellet was surgically removed and the wound was cleaned and closed. The patient recovered over the next few weeks. Like all species that are high risk for HPAI, this goose was kept in quarantine while we awaited negative test results. We treat each group of high-risk birds as

This fledgling Carolina Chickadee was brought to the finder by a cat. Immediately upon intake, our staff placed this bird into oxygen as they were in severe respiratory distress. You can see in the video the amount of effort this bird needs just to breathe, despite having high oxygen levels in the incubator. Our staff had to wait for this bird to stabilize for quite a bit before we could even do a full exam. This is the reality for most cat-caught wildlife - if they're not killed outright. Birds

Some of our overwintering Woodland Box Turtles are feeling better and growing accustomed to breakfast in bed service! Woodland Box Turtles are scavenging omnivores and eat a wild diet consisting of carrion (dead animals), berries, greens, flowers, mushrooms, invertebrates, and more. Young box turtles are almost exclusively carnivorous, as they need the protein and calcium from bones and meat to grow and develop well. In care, staff tries to keep diets varied, balanced, and similar to their wild

With this bout of warmer weather, we've been making moves to get many otherwise-healthy patients back home, including some of our overwintering bats, like this Hoary Bat! This female bat was found outside on a cold winter day near the finder's home and, concerned about her lethargy and the cold temperature, was able to safely contain her and bring her to us for evaluation. Thankfully she didn't have any obvious injuries, but she was quite skinny and still lethargic after a slow rewarming. After

This juvenile Turkey Vulture that was in care with us for over a month recovering from a clavicle fracture has finally been released! This bird was found down on the side of the road unable to fly, likely after being hit by a vehicle. Thankfully the finders were able to to contain the vulture and transport to us for evaluation and treatment! This bird recovered well, and made it very obvious while in care that they wanted nothing to do with us, demonstrating a behavior vultures commonly do in th
