The New Zealand (Māori) Pioneer Battalion served at Anzac Cove, Gallipoli as infantry soldiers. On the Western front they were deployed as a work force behind the front lines digging trenches and drains, doing farm work, laying railway lines, erecting wire entanglements, burying artillery cables and even building a cinema called "Kapai Theatre."
